History of
West End United

This church was established in the West End section of Portsmouth in February 1942 in the midst of World War II by approximately 15 families. They first met in the Westhaven Community Hall on March 15, 1942. By April 5, 1942 (Easter Sunday) they had their first preaching service with 41 persons present.

Pastor Lynda Moore

Pastor Linda was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia.   She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Social Work degree and received a Master of Divinity degree from the School of Theology at Virginia Union University in Richmond. She retired after 30 years from Richmond City Department of Social Services.

Susan Heely

Director of Music

Susan Heely is retired from teaching music in the Portsmouth Public Schools. She has been a music theory teacher and accompanist at Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk since 2014. Her BMus Ed is from James Madison University, and her MS Ed is from Old Dominion University .  Her major instrument is piano, and she minored in organ and voice. She has been a church organist/choirmaster for 44 years, currently at West End United Methodist Church in Portsmouth. As a competition Pipe Band member, she has performed in the Virginia International Tattoo for over 16 years.  In addition, she has accompanied the Tidewater Opera Initiative, competed on the East Coast of United States with Tidewater Pipes and Drums, and specializes in 15-17th century instrumental music from Scotland and Ireland. In 2014, she received the Alli Award for Hampton Roads Outstanding Arts Educator. She has performed instrumentally throughout the United States and Australia. She has 3 children and 3 grandchildren.

Church Secretary

Gail Sasser born and raised in Nashville, TN.  After graduating from high school, Gail attended Furman University in Greenville, SC where she majored in music.  Gail has taught piano for the past 40 years; 36 of those years have been in Chesapeake since moving here in 1981.  She has  been working at West End UMC since the Fall of 1997.  Gail is  married to Neal Sasser who has been in ministry either serving local congregations or as a hospital chaplain.  They have one adult daughter and 2 grandchildren.  When not teaching or working at West End, Gail enjoys working in the yard and reading.
